THE WEEKEND AWAY
The Weekend Away is Leighton Meester’s first major film appearance in years, and it’s on the Netflix Originals’ TV-movie end of the spectrum: Flat and washed out, sparsely inhabited, and sometimes hilarious. It’s neither Gone Girl or Girl on the Train; instead, name it Girl Near a Beach.
Before the story devolves into absurdity, Meester focuses on the film’s one redeeming feature: its intriguing hook. She portrays Beth, a new mother who reunites with a college bestie for a vacation in Croatia while her husband and kid are in London. Beth oozes practicality: minimal makeup; utilitarian, pumping-friendly bra; mom jeans. Beth seems tentative and a bit uneasy at the offer to have some fun. She adores Kate (Christina Wolfe), but she can’t stand her obnoxious carousing anymore.
Apart from making up for neglecting their relationship, she’s not sure what she’s doing there. When Kate goes missing, Beth is compelled to prolong her vacation indefinitely in order to unravel the mystery. Beth isn’t very adept at being alone herself. She’s hardly a crack detective; she continues begging a sympathetic taxi driver for a ride, and as the case unfolds, she responds with petulant exasperation rather than grit.
A MADEA HOMECOMING
Tyler Perry’s most renowned character has now appeared in even twelve films, in addition to 11 plays, one animated feature, and guest appearances or references on three different TV programs.
