The Woman King: Is There a Trailer?
There is a trailer, for sure! The woman king trailer, released on July 6, 2022, provides a peek at the horrific savagery that threatens Dahomey and the techniques used to train the Dahomey Amazons.
It is everything I’m hoping the movie will be. It was so trailing as the determination was written over the Amazon’s faces.
The Woman King: What Is It About?
The Woman King is a historical epic based on actual events. It is about a fearsome, all-female military regiment known as the Agojie.
She has the responsibility of protecting her people and the independence of their West African Kingdom when confronted with outside aggressors in the late 1800s.
Because these women resemble the mythical Amazons, historians gave them the appellation “Dahomey Amazons.”
Women finally took over the military due to the high mortality rate of men in the Kingdom due to ongoing warfare with other West African states and the slave trade.
When European soldiers start to invade, General Nanisca (Davis) must deal with a threat to the Kingdom of Dahomey.
The Franco-Dahomeyan Conflict, which lasted from 1890 to 1894, served as inspiration for the epic war she waged against them.
Additionally, Thuso Mbedu’s portrayal of ambitious new hire Nawi is a major theme in Nanisca (The Underground Railroad).
The real-life “last Dahomey Amazon” with the same name is the inspiration for the character Nawi. Nawi lived for over 100 years old before dying in 1979.

Fun fact about the Dahomey Amazons
- Dahomey was a little kingdom positioned in the northeastern region of what is now Benin.
- The Amazons used their hands and bare feet to fight. They marched into combat barefoot and fought largely with their bodies, clubs, and knives.
- They were so huge that people believed that after their first murder, they became men.
- King Gezo created the Amazons. He was so impressed with the gbeto hunters and publicly praised them. “I would have enjoyed a manhunt,” one replied to the King’s praise. The King was so captivated by them that he recruited them to fight in his army.
- The army was the only institution where women partake in combat tasks.
- They were all married to the King, but he never slept with them!
Take Away
I love that this movie not only displays the African culture but the role women played in the history of the world. This film promotes feminism and would be a great source of inspiration for many young ladies. I believe it will be a good watch and I can’t wait for it.
