Causes of back pain
When a disc between two vertebrae ruptures, a portion of the material from the centre of the disc can push out into the spinal canal and press on a nerve root. This is called a herniated disc or slipped disc.
It is more likely to happen if you have weak abdominal muscles, poor posture, or are overweight because of excess pressure on your spine from your body weight.
Muscle strain or sprain
Working out incorrectly or lifting weights improperly can also lead to back problems. If your muscles are loose or weak, they can strain easily when lifting heavy objects. Repetitive stress injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome can also cause back pain due to overuse of your hands and wrists while performing everyday tasks.
People with back problems are more likely to have hip problems, too. Hip problems can contribute to back pain through inflammation of soft tissues around the joint or arthritis that leads to joint stiffness.

Treatment for back pain depends on the cause and severity of your symptoms. In most instances, the first port of call is your doctor who will ask questions about your symptoms and carry out an examination. They may also recommend that you undergo tests such as X-rays or scans to gain a better understanding of what is causing your pain and how best to treat it.

Resting your back
This is the simplest and usually the solution for most back pain. Stop or reduce any activity that causes or worsens your pain. Rest helps to relieve muscle spasms, which in turn reduces pain. Your doctor may recommend lying down with a pillow under your knees while keeping both feet flat on the bed. This position can help decrease short-term lower back pain by taking pressure off the discs between the vertebrae of the spine.
Exercise helps strengthen your muscles, giving them support and flexibility when needed. It also eases stress and anxiety and reduces fatigue. Make sure you’re getting enough aerobic activity as well as muscle-strengthening exercises.
Most of us have experienced back pain at some point in our lives. Staying active cuts down on stress levels and helps strengthen your muscles. Plus there’s something very satisfying about being independent despite your condition.
