Signs to know you’re in a healthy relationship
Equality
Relationships should be safe and fair. This means in a relationship, power should be shared instead of one person bossing the other around.
Equality is also sharing effort. If you start feeling your input is more than that of your partner’s, it is an unequal relationship.
Good communication
Communication is key in every healthy relationship. Being able to talk and listen to each other about your feelings and thoughts.
Bad communication is the foundation for a toxic relationship.
Be yourself
Whenever you are around who you are dating, you should always feel comfy. The moment you stop being true to yourself then there is a problem.
Trying to change yourself for your partner doesn’t always work out in the long run. So, I wouldn’t advise it.
Trust
What is a relationship without trust? Partners should be able to trust each other with everything. Trust in a relationship means supporting one another, looking out for each other and counting on each other.
A relationship built on trust is bound to last.
Respect
Saying no to things that makes you uncomfortable shouldn’t cause issues. In a relationship, you should respect each other opinions and wishes even when it doesn’t favour you.
Making decisions together
Why is it only you calling the shots or why is it only your partner? Decisions should be made together while also listening to each other’s concerns. No one should feel like he/she don’t matter.
Feel safe
At no point should you feel threatened both emotionally and physically in a relationship? Being in a healthy relationship means knowing your partner won’t try to hurt your feelings or your body.
Your relationship should be a safe place for you.
Deal with argument
Arguments and fights are part of a relationship. In fact, if there is neither then one person is probably holding back emotions and that is not healthy.
How you deal with fights or arguments will define what type of relationship you are in. In a healthy relationship, you should be able to;
- stay calm
- avoid accusations
- step back from the situation
- address the issue
- be respectful
when there is a fight or argument.
